He was a gardener of Algiers Cottages, Dullingham. Husband of the late Eliza Louisa CHAPMAN (née BOWERS) Born in 1865 in Ashley on 19th January 1865 (Newmarket Q1-1865 3B:565), son of the late John and Emma CHAPMAN (née BAILEY). 1871 census...Aged 6, he was at Ashley with his father John CHAPMAN [31] farm labourer; mother Emma [32]; sister Rebecca [9]; brothers James [8], William [3] and Charles [1] and his grandmother Sally CHAPMAN [78]. All were born in Ashley. 1881 census...Aged 16, a grocer's errand boy, he was at Ditton Cottages, Woodditton with his parents (mother now recorded as born in Kennett); brothers James (farm labourer, William (tailor's errand boy) Charles, Alfred [6] born Exning, Herbert [4] and Arthur [1]; sister Alice [9]. Herbert and Arthur were born in Ditton Lodge. 1891 census...Aged 26, single, a gardener's labourer, he was at Railway Crossing, Woodditton with his parents (father now horse keeper); brothers James (carman), Alfred (railway porter), Herbert (grocer's errand boy), Arthur scholar and sisters Alice and Emma Ellen [8] born Woodditton. He married Eliza Louisa BOWERS in 1894 in Burwell. She apparently died in Kingsclere in 1912 1901 census...Aged 36, a domestic gardener, he was at 3 Peck's Villas, Exning Road, Newmarket with his wife Louisa [31] born Burwell and their 2 sons, Henry W [6] and Maurice D [4] both born in Newmarket. 1911 census...Aged 46, a domestic gardener, he was at Park Cottages, Kingsclere with his wife and son Maurice. In the 1939 register he seems to be a widowed jobbing gardener, at 38 Rasper Road, Finchley with his son Maurice D [9-2-1897] a motor mechanic, and daughter in law Mabel [22-1-1900] Henry was injured in the High Street, Newmarket and died the same day at White Lodge Emergency Hospital, Exning Road, Newmarket.
